A dog believes it is a member of a pack that operates within the principles descended from the wolf pack. Whether the pack consists of a large family with other animals, or in a simple you and the dog unit, your dog is part of a social group which has a pecking order that must be adhered to at all times. If the dog does not elect you as the leader it believes that it must be leader of the pack. What's more in that situation, the humans with which they live unintentionally send out signals using body language, that elect them to the role over and over again.
